Paleo Diet – Yay or Nay?

Paleo diet is basically the idea that you should eat what our caveman ancestors ate. The diet includes grass-fed animals, fruit, fish, nuts, veggies, seeds, eggs, and different oils. That means no to all the chocolaty goodness we are offered everywhere. No chocolate-glazed chocolate with chocolate filling, no processed sugar, or processed foods of any kind, really, so that means you can also forget about bread, pizza, French fries, and everything else that allows you to stuff yourself with unhealthy amount of calories. So should you do it?

Supporters of the diet say that (even though it sounds horrible) it’s optimal and healthier alternative to the highly processed foods we now eat (but then again, what isn’t?). In defense of the diet, they say that even though our society has somewhat changed in the past 12,000 years, genetically we haven’t moved that much (which is technically true). So if you eat like our ancestors did, you will be healthier, you will feel better, and you will be thinner. If we look at it superficially, they do have a point, but then again do you really want to look at it superficially?

Opponents of the diet say that almost everything the proponents of the diet believe is bloody nonsense. First off, they argue, it’s almost impossible to tell what exactly people in the Paleolithic were eating. Second, they continue, humans have lived in different areas with different conditions, hence there was not just one, but possibly hundreds of “Paleo diets”. Third, and they drive this point across fairly well, the fact that we used to do something back in caveman days doesn’t mean that it’s good for us. In short, the Paleo diet is more of a fad than anything else. At the end of the day, though, losing weight requires sacrifice and you have to eat like caveman to do it, who can stop you?
